Celebrating the life of

Wayne Daughtry

September 29, 1949 - September 24, 2012

Wayne Daughtry

Anthony Wayne Daughtry was born on September 29th 1949 and grew up in the Silk Hope area of Chatham County. He is one of 3 sons born to Melba Conley Daughtry and Alvin Daughtry. Wayne, as he was called by his family and friends, struggled valiantly with cerebral palsy all of his life. Mr. Daughtry was born in a time when children with developmental disabilities were not allowed to attend public school. He was one of the first students at the Trustee's Garden School and later the Kicklighter School. Found among Mr. Daughtry's personal possessions were class photos from two elementary schools within the Chatham Savannah Public School System dating back to the change in mindset toward developmental disability and education. Mr. Daughtry later worked in the sheltered workshop as well as having a small Christmas bow business that he ran for several years. Mr. Daughtry was a founding member of The St. James Storytellers Group, a grassroots group devoted to helping people move out of nursing homes and establish themselves as members of our community. Wayne will be remembered as a soft spoken, determined man who was deeply loved by many people who shared in his struggle. Mr. Jeff Alden and Mr. Kim Abbott and his godly nursing assistants who walked the walk: Janie Geiger, Mary White, Ernestine Glover, Betty Cosby and Latisha Brown were blessed to become like family to Mr. Daughtry.

Mr. Daughtry passed from this life very peacefully in his own home September 24 at 2.13 a.m. surrounded by those who loved him. He is survived by two brothers, Larry and Kenny Daughtry a niece, Shari Wilson, nephew-in-law, Randy Wilson and great niece, Libby Wilson, not to mention aunts, uncles and a huge extended family. Mr. Daughtry will be remembered as a man's man, who showed the rest of us what a paradigm of moral strength and perseverance in the face of heartbreak and intense physical suffering looks like. "As the hind longs for flowing streams, so longs my soul for thee, O God." Ps. 42.1 Hallelujah!

A memorial birthday celebration for Mr. Daughtry will be take place near his birth place for family and friends.

Remembrances: In lieu of flowers please send donations to Chatham Savannah Citizen Advocacy which can be contacted at 912 236-5798.
